Sophos, one of the leading anti-virus companies, has published its latest report into the top spam relaying countries, covering the first quarter of 2011.
| Top 10 spam relaying countries (January to March 2011) |
| 1. USA | 13.7% |
| 2. India | 7.1% |
| 3. Russia | 6.6% |
| 4. Brazil | 6.4% |
| 5. South Korea | 3.8% |
| 6. United Kingdom | 3.2% |
| 7. Italy | 3.1% |
| 8. France | 3.1% |
| 9. Spain | 2.8% |
| 10. Germany | 2.6% |
South Africa ranked 51, with 0.29% of global spam output.
Despite the USA's proportion of global spam output dropping significantly, it remains at the top, whilst the UK’s decrease saw it dropping from fifth to sixth spot, in the top spam relaying countries in the first quarter of 2011.
Although these countries have seen a percentage decrease in terms of global spam output, it is essential for organisations not to become complacent.
"Businesses and computer users must take a more proactive approach to spam filtering and IT security in order to avoid adding to this global problem." says Brett Myroff, CEO of regional Sophos distributor, Sophos South Africa.
