Mail Servers
|
A mail server is a server that works in conjunction with software applications, forming a messaging system that sends and receives email.
Mail transferred across networks passes between several mail servers, each running special software, built on standardised protocols for handling mail messages, including graphics and attachment files. The system uses either SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) or ESMTP (extended SMTP) for sending e-mail, and either POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) or IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) for receiving e-mail.
A mail server has a variety of additional features, including:
- Local delivery of internal mail – mail between internal users is not transferred across internet lines
- Backup of mail at server level – no need to backup outlook pst files on user workstations
- Control of mail content – restricted content can be prevented from leaving the organisation
Cinotas provides the following convenient managed mail services:
- utilising and managing Cinotas' physical servers at clients' premises
- utilising clients' physical server and managing the service only
